Flatten a fillable PDF for e-filing
CM/ECF and state e-filing systems routinely bounce documents that still contain active form fields — and several courts require flattening outright. The Fourth Circuit’s filing guidance, for instance, tells filers to flatten completed forms “to ensure the document can be viewed on all devices and to prevent other users from manipulating or editing the information” (checked July 2026 — always confirm your own court’s local rules).

Why the print-to-PDF workaround isn’t ideal
The advice courts usually give — print the form to a PDF printer — works, but it re-renders the entire document: file sizes balloon on scanned exhibits, text can re-rasterize, and hyperlinks and searchable text are sometimes lost. Flattening surgically, as this tool does, changes only the form layer: values are painted in, fields are removed, and every other byte of the document passes through untouched.
One thing flattening is not: redaction. Values become permanent visible content. If your filing needs information removed, redact properly before flattening — the Fourth Circuit’s guidance specifically warns that Word-created redactions can remain editable in the PDF.

- File-size limits apply at most courts too — if your flattened filing is heavy with scanned exhibits, the compressor brings it down with the quality trade-off under your control.

Frequently asked questions
How do I know the flattening worked?
Open the downloaded file and click where a field used to be — nothing should highlight or accept input. The values remain visible as ordinary text. Your filing system’s validator should now pass the document.
Does flattening satisfy “no active content” rules generally?
It removes interactive form fields, the usual trigger. Some courts also restrict JavaScript, attachments or multimedia inside PDFs — rarer requirements that need checking against your court’s specific rules.
Will my e-signature image survive flattening?
A signature placed as an image or a filled signature field flattens into the page like any other content. A cryptographic digital signature, however, will no longer validate after any edit — flatten before applying one, not after.
Is it safe to flatten a confidential filing here?
The document is processed entirely in your browser’s memory — no upload, no server copy, no retention. You can verify with the Network tab open, and the tool even works offline once the page is loaded.
